How We Measure Success in the SCPL: The Two KPIs that Matter Most

In most youth soccer leagues, success is measured with one number: the scoreline. And yes, in the Steel City Premier League (SCPL), we keep score. Winning matters — it’s part of our Phase Model to coach players on how to win the game in front of them.
But at Steel City FC, we don’t stop there. Scores don’t tell the full story of how a game was played or whether that success is sustainable at the next level. Did the win come from controlled possession, smart decision-making, and applying our game model? Or did it come from one lucky bounce?

That’s why we are pioneering a data-driven approach to player development. We layer two key performance indicators (KPIs) on top of the scoreline to know whether our players are growing the right way.
The Two Metrics that Matter Most
In the SCPL, we track two key metrics that go beyond wins and losses:
- Front-Half Regains
- BUCs (Ball Under Control in the Opponent’s Box)
These are not random stats. They align directly with our game model — the blueprint that defines how Steel City plays soccer. Every serious club should have one. A game model ensures that every player, regardless of age, gender, or ability, is being taught the same principles of play. It’s what makes a club’s identity recognizable, no matter who is on the field.
Parents choosing a club should always ask: What’s your game model, and how do you apply it at every level?
At Steel City FC, the SCPL is our platform to put our model into practice and to measure whether it’s working.
Front-half Regains: Controlling the Field, Not Just the Ball

Winning the ball back in the opponent’s half is one thing. Doing something with it is another. At our club, we believe in playing a modern, high-pressing style. To do it effectively, we train not only the actions during the press, but what needs to come next following a successful duel.
A front-half regain is when we win the ball in the opponent’s half and immediately complete a pass or dribble. This tells us that we’re:
-
Playing in the right territory: closer to their goal, not ours.
-
Creating instant attacking chances in dangerous areas.
-
Reducing risk by keeping pressure far from our own net.
The more front-half regains we earn, the more control we have over the game.

BUCs: Quality Over Hope

Too many teams rely on “hope soccer” — punting balls forward, lofting corners, or launching free kicks into the box, often toward players too young to head the ball. That doesn’t develop players. That’s chance.
We measure BUCs: Balls Under Control in the Opponent’s Box. These are dribbles, passes, receptions, or shots in the penalty area where the ball is controlled. They prove:
-
Our players are comfortable in the most pressured part of the field.
-
We’re creating real scoring chances, not relying on chaos.
-
We’re building the habits that will hold up against tougher competition.
Simply put: BUCs are about composure, skill, and repeatable success.

Why This Matters for Your Child

As BUCs eclipse front-half regains, it may signify two things: 1) we are getting better at possessing the ball and 2) we are becoming more efficient at creating chances from our regains.
Front-half regains and BUCs may sound technical, but for parents the message is simple: they prove your child is learning to play the game the right way.
By tracking these KPIs, your child is:
-
Developing confidence under pressure.
-
Building the ability to control matches at higher levels.
-
Preparing for success in high school, college, and beyond.
No other local club is tracking these metrics. The SCPL makes Steel City the only environment in Pittsburgh where players’ progress is measured not just by goals and wins, but by the habits that create long-term success.
The Big Picture

At Steel City FC, winning matters, but how we win matters more. By holding ourselves accountable to front-half regains and BUCs, we are making sure that our players aren’t just collecting results. They’re building the skills, mindset, and identity to thrive on any stage.
That’s the Steel City difference: intentional, data-driven, player-first. And it’s why the SCPL is more than just another league, it’s how we see the future of youth soccer in Pittsburgh.
For parents, this means peace of mind. You’re not just signing your child up for games on the weekend — you’re placing them in an environment where every match, every touch, and every decision is part of a bigger plan. A plan designed to develop confident, adaptable players who will be ready for the opportunities that matter most down the road.
